SANTO DOMINGO.- President Leonel Fernandez defended his trips abroad because in his view they attract capitals and technology for developing education and production and feels that DR-CAFTA guarantees Dominicans a permanent access to the global market.
Fernandez said that the country is fully inserted in a international context of complexities and uncertainties and there is a need to find clarity and a plan of action that allows to overcome that situation and guarantee he prosperity and progress for the Dominican nation.
He stated that the country can continue advancing within the manufacturing industry and to attract investment capitals from the large multinational companies, with a production that meets the American market.
He mentioned the liberalizing of commerce with the free trade agreements, beginning with DR-CAFTA, as part of a new economic model for Dominican Republic.
He feels that the country cannot sell the idea that it’s interested in attracting investment based on cheap manual labor, and instead must be able to produce and attract capitals from global companies, and thus becoming springboard to enter the American market.
Fernandez proposed developing human capital and democratizing the society of information and communication, so that the population has access to it, prior to guaranteeing digital knowledge in the primary and university levels.
The chief executive made his statements in a speech to conclude the seminar organized by the American Chamber of Commerce, to launch the Communication Institute for Online Scholarship (CIOS), in Dominican Republic.
In the seminar participated companies who produce and develop information and communication, as well as Government agencies.
