
Dominican Senate begins debating Free Trade legislation

Santo Domingo.- The permanent commission of the Industry, Commerce and Duty Free Zones in the Senate today begins to study all legislative initiatives relative to the Free Trade Agreement with Central America and the United States (DR-CAFTA), submitted by the Executive power this past week.
Commission president, Liberation Party senator Heinz Vieiuf Cabrera, summoned the other members to meet at 9:00 a.m., to evaluate bills that are pre-required for implementing the DR-CAFTA.
Among the issues to be analyzed by the Commission is the modification of Law 20-00 on industrial property rights, Penal Code revisions, Law 65-00 on copyrights. Also to be addressed is the revision of the General Telecommunications Law on foreign firms agents and representatives, and Law 226-06 that grants autonomy to the General Customs Authority.
